Beam patterns of headlights
The beam pattern of a headlamp defines the way in which light is projected onto the road. It serves to optimise visibility for the driver and to avoid dazzling other road users.
These include a minimum and maximum brightness, a defined beam pattern and a definition of the light colour.
Beam pattern
A distinction is generally made in front vehicle lighting
- Low beam: Illuminates the road asymmetrically so as not to dazzle oncoming traffic.
- High beam: Ensures maximum illumination in the dark and may only be used when there is no oncoming traffic.
- Fog light: Reduces stray light in poor visibility conditions caused by fog, rain or snow.
Other headlamp types are possible.
Legal requirement
The beam patterns of headlights must fulfil the requirements of the respective applicable road approval.
